2026 US stock market holidays: when trading is closed for UAE investors

A Dubai investor buying US-listed shares works an evening shift. The New York session opens at 5:30 pm Gulf Standard Time through the summer and 6:30 pm through the winter, and it runs past midnight either way. US stock market holidays are easy to miss from that vantage point, because the closure falls on a weekday that looks entirely ordinary in the UAE and the trading screen just stays flat.

The 2026 calendar has ten full closures and two half-day trading sessions. Every date below comes from the NYSE Group holiday announcement, cross-checked against the exchange's markets hours and calendars page.

The full 2026 US stock market holidays calendar

Two dates in that table get reported incorrectly on a lot of calendar sites. Independence Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, which moves the observance to Friday 3 July as a full closure. Several aggregators have published 3 July as a 1:00 pm early close, which repeats the 2024 and 2025 pattern from years when the holiday landed midweek. Fidelity's 2026 summary confirms the full-day closure.

Good Friday is the only NYSE closure of the year that is not a US federal holiday. Banks and government offices in the United States work normally on 3 April while the exchanges stay shut.

NYSE holidays 2026 and the two half-day trading sessions

An early close cuts the regular cash equity session from 4:00 pm to 1:00 pm Eastern Time. Both 2026 half days fall after the clocks go back, so both convert the same way for a UAE reader. The session opens at 6:30 pm GST and finishes at 10:00 pm instead of running to 1:00 am.

The abbreviation reaches past the core session. On these two dates the NYSE American Equities, NYSE Arca Equities, NYSE National and NYSE Texas late trading sessions close at 5:00 pm ET, which is 2:00 am the next morning in Dubai rather than 4:00 am. Eligible options close at 1:15 pm ET.

What half-day trading looks like from Dubai

Friday 27 November and Thursday 24 December give a Gulf-based investor a three-and-a-half-hour window instead of the usual six and a half. Volume on both dates is usually thin, and the closing auction happens at 10:00 pm GST, well before the point in the evening at which many UAE investors would normally sit down with their positions.

US trading hours and UAE time zone conversion

Gulf Standard Time sits at UTC+4 and never changes. Eastern Time moves twice a year, and NIST confirms daylight saving time runs from 8 March to 1 November in 2026. The gap between New York and Dubai is eight hours for most of the year and nine hours across the winter.

Why the UAE time zone conversion shifts twice in 2026

Two dates move the whole schedule by an hour: 8 March and 1 November. In March the US closing bell pulls back from 1:00 am to midnight Dubai time, and in November it pushes out again. Calendar reminders and price alerts built on a fixed GST time will drift on both occasions unless they are anchored to the America/New_York zone.

Through the winter months the US close lands after midnight in the UAE, so the last hour of a Thursday session in New York belongs to Friday morning in Dubai. Trade confirmations and end of day statements can carry a date that looks a day off.

Is the stock market open today? Checking from the Gulf

The date has to be a weekday in New York, and it must not appear on the holiday list above. Unscheduled closures are the third possibility and the rarest. The NYSE shut for two days during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, and for a day of mourning after the death of President George H. W. Bush in December 2018.

UAE public holidays do nothing to this calendar. Eid holidays and UAE National Day leave the NYSE and Nasdaq schedule untouched. National Day on 2 and 3 December 2026 falls on a Wednesday and a Thursday, both ordinary full sessions in New York, so a UAE investor on holiday that week still has a live market opening at 6:30 pm GST.

Dubai Financial Market and Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange run Monday to Friday, and their calendar shares nothing with the US one beyond the weekend.

The bond market runs a different market closure calendar

US fixed income follows recommendations from SIFMA rather than the NYSE schedule, and the two diverge on several 2026 dates. The SIFMA holiday schedule sets out the differences.

Bond markets close fully on Columbus Day, Monday 12 October, and on Veterans Day, Wednesday 11 November. Equities trade normal sessions on both. On Good Friday the position reverses, with equities shut all day while SIFMA recommends a 12:00 pm ET close for bonds.

SIFMA also adds 2:00 pm ET early closes that equities do not observe, on Friday 22 May, Thursday 2 July and Thursday 31 December, alongside the shared 27 November and 24 December dates.

This affects portfolios holding bond ETFs, sukuk or any fixed income allocation. On a bond market holiday the underlying instruments are not pricing, so an ETF trading on the NYSE that day is quoting against stale reference values. Treasury auctions shift around these dates as well.

Extended trading hours may reshape US stock market holidays from December 2026

NYSE Arca has published a target launch date of 6 December 2026 for extended-hours trading, with sessions running 23 hours a day from 9:00 pm to 8:00 pm ET, five days a week, according to the exchange's extended-hours materials. The SEC approved a comparable 23-hour, five-day structure for Nasdaq in April 2026.

A 9:00 pm ET session start converts to roughly 6:00 am GST in winter and 5:00 am in summer, which places a live US session inside the Gulf morning.

Holidays survive the change in modified form. The NYSE extended-hours FAQ describes the late session finishing the evening before a holiday, with the next overnight session opening at 9:00 pm on the evening of the holiday itself, so a closure would shorten the available window without blanking the whole date. Clearing infrastructure readiness and further regulatory approvals still gate the launch, and the December date could move.

Planning around US stock market holidays from the UAE

Settlement is where closures bite first. US equities settle on T+1, so a holiday pushes the settlement date for trades placed immediately beforehand. Investors expecting cash to clear on a particular day may want to count trading days rather than calendar days across a closure week.

Ex-dividend and record dates shift for the same reason, which can change whether a position captures a distribution.

Open limit orders sit unexecuted across a closure, and a multi-day gap can produce a wider spread between the last close and the next open. Orders left working over Thanksgiving or the Christmas period could be reviewed before the break rather than after it.

Currency markets stay open through US holidays, though USD liquidity thins, which can widen conversion spreads for anyone funding a USD account on one of these dates.
